Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the option to contest specific decisions made by the official, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
