Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
