Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then found multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the substance was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.
An important official said the attack left him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
